Wait until it’s nearly time to go out and your dog is getting excited about her forthcoming walk. Put the lead in a place where it’s easily accessible to her (on the floor, or on a low chair or table), then get her attention, indicate the lead, and ask her to ‘Take it’.

Praise her when she picks it up. If it’s trailing and she seems to be finding it awkward to carry, knot it up a little to make it easier for her. Now ask her to ‘Come along’ and walk briskly away. She’ll probably follow you, and if you don’t take the lead she’s likely to keep carrying it. If she drops it, ask her to ‘Take it’ again and wait until she picks it up before walking on.
